As summer draws to a close, there's still plenty of fun to be found in Morgan County! Explore the outdoors, enjoy local dining options and don't forget about upcoming events this month. Farmers' Market is still going strong with a plethora of locally grown produce and handcrafted items. Live music options abound and it's time to talk about all those upcoming festivals that carry through from now until October! Here's our list of top events to get on your calendar this August:
Merry MAC Players Presents Baggage
Martinsville's community theatre presents Baggage, a comedy focused around two un-centered single people. Both trying to heal from respective disappointing relationships, the two get their luggage mixed up at the airport and end up forcing a friendship that eventually leads to their future. Tickets are available online for the show, which runs Aug. 3-12.
2nd Annual Pioneer Acoustic Musicfest
For the second year, acoustic musicians will gather at in Mooresville for Pioneer Acoustic Musicfest, put on by Mooresville Acoustic Music Friends. Come enjoy the sounds of these talented local and regional artists. Music begins at Noon on Aug. 4 and continues until 9 pm. Food and drink will be available on site.
Link Observatory Open
Join Link Observatory for their monthly open hours. On the first Saturday of each month, you're invited to come view the stars (and sometimes planets!). Weather permitting, the observatory's dome will be open for viewing beginning at 8:30 pm on Aug. 4
Old Settlers Picnic & Fair
An annual Mooresville tradition, this year marks the 147th year of the Old Settlers Picnic & Fair. Held at Pioneer Park, this fun event features carnival rides, games, live music, local booths and food vendors. The event kicks off with the Old Settlers Parade on Sunday and continues through Tuesday, Aug. 5-7.
Link Observatory Daytime Hours
Don't miss your chance to explore the historic Link Observatory during daylight hours! On Thursday, Aug. 9 the observatory will be open from 9 am to 3 pm for visitors to stop by and learn more about this Morgan County treasure, it's unique and fascinating history and where they're headed in the future.
No Cover Songwriter's Showcase
On the second Thursday of each month, Aug. 9 this month, enjoy live music from local and regional singer-songwriters. The No Cover Songwriter's Showcase takes place at Zydeco's Cajun in downtown Mooresville, beginning at 5 pm.
Mystic Menagerie Bicycle Tour
Join the Central Indiana Bicycling Association for this fun annual ride through Morgan County on Aug. 11. Mystic Menagerie Bicycle Tour participants will meet at South Elementary School in Martinsville and choose from three different routes - 18, 32 or 62 miles. All are welcome to participate; helmets are required.
Wilson & Company
The final Summer Concert at Willowfield Lavender Farm will be Saturday, August 11. Enjoy the sounds of regional favorites Wilson & Company amid the lavender. Neighboring Mallow Run Winery will be on hand with wine tasting and sales. All ages welcome.
Rebels of the Sun
The first Bicentennial Park Concert of the month will take place on Aug. 11, featuring Rebels of the Sun. Music begins at 7 pm and the event is free. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and even a picnic!
Joe Hess & the Wandering Cowboys
The Main Street Stage at Tom Fiddlery in downtown Martinsville welcomes Joe Hess & the Wandering Cowboys for a fun evening of live music on Aug. 11. There are two shows - the early show at 6 pm with dinner available, and the late show at 8 pm. All ages welcome; admission is $15 per person.
Link Live Program
Join the experts from Link Observatory Space Science Institute on Aug. 18 for a multi-media presentation focusing in on some aspect of space exploration or the universe beyond Earth. Program begins at 8 pm at the Mooresville Public Library, followed by telescope observation at the Observatory if weather permits.
Love of Rum Pairing Dinner
Join 21 North Eatery & Cellar for another of their tasty pairing dinners on Tuesday, Aug. 21. This time, Chef Matt Harakal is creating culinary gems to pair with Bacardi Rum. Enjoy this multiple course food and rum pairing for only $55 per person. Reserve your seats before they're gone!
Enjoy live music at Mooresville's Bicentennial Park on the evening of Aug. 25, featuring Random Reaction. Music begins at 7 pm and the event is free. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to relax at the area's newest park.
Eat to the Beat
This fun event featuring live music and food trucks returns to the Morgan County Fairgrounds on Aug. 25. Eat to the Beat is a fundraiser for the Barbara B Jordan YMCA. You'll enjoy live music from three bands along with great food from several food trucks. Admission is $15 in advance or $20 at the gate.
The Main Street Stage at Tom Fiddlery invites you to enjoy the sounds of Ivy Smith on Saturday, Aug. 25. This intimate performance venue features two performances - the early show, with dinner available, at 6 pm and the late show at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 per person.
Atom Heart Mother
It's time for another Drink at the Creek concert! Cedar Creek Winery, Brew Co., and Distillery invite you to join them for a free concert featuring Atom Heart Mother, a Pink Floyd tribute band, and Saturday, Aug. 25. The concert is free, but there is a $10 per car parking fee.
Y Fun Run Series: Pioneer Park
Come explore Pioneer Park with a fun run on Aug. 29. The Barbara B Jordan YMCA is hosting a Y Fun Run Series at a variety of area parks this summer, leading up to their annual Y Run in November. November's race requires a registration fee, but the practice fun runs are free! Race begins at 6 pm.
94th Annual Paragon Homecoming Festival
This Morgan County tradition takes place on Labor Day Weekend each year. The Paragon Homecoming Festival features carnival rides, games, food booths and lots of live music. Join the small town of Paragon for their annual celebration, Aug. 31 - Sept. 3.
