As we find ourselves a full month into the New Year, it's that time of year that's rather unpredictable in Indiana... it could be frigid cold and icy, or almost spring-like. That means last minute adventures can be found just by going out doors - hit up "Park Hill" at Jimmy Nash Park for a fun slide down when it's snowy, or head for one of the area's many trails for some fresh air on milder days. (We recommend sticking to the paved trails just after a thaw - trudging through inches of mud isn't good for the natural surface trails, and it's not much fun either.) Of course, you can't forget about fun events throughout Morgan County - things start ramping up again n February after a brief lull after the holidays. Here's our pick for February events to get on your calendar:
Link Observatory Events - Feb. 2, 14 & 16
The Link Observatory Space Science Institute will have three opportunities for you to visit, explore and observe this month. On Feb. 2, they will host open public observation hours in the evening. On Feb. 14, the facility will have daytime open hours from 9 am to 3 pm, and they will host a LinkLive event on Feb. 16, featuring a multi-media presentation at the Mooresville Public Library followed by viewing at the observatory.
Harry Potter Book Night - Feb. 7
The Mooresville Public Library invites Harry Potter fans of all age to celebrate JK Rowling's wonderful series. Prepare to attend Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for one night only, beginning at 6 pm.
2nd Friday Open Studios Night - Feb. 8
Explore downtown Martinsville on the second Friday of the month. The Art Sanctuary hosts an Open Studios Night where you can mingle with resident artists and many other downtown businesses are open late to welcome you. Discover The Sterling Butterfly, Martinsville Candy Kitchen, De Lyne Jewelry and more!
Roe's Annual Antiques & Collectibles Auction - Feb. 9
A Morgan County tradition, this auction featuring a wide variety of antiques and collectibles takes place each year at the Morgan County Fairgrounds. This auction event is so big, it takes two auction houses to make it happen! Who knows what treasures you'll discover?
Roger Banister - Feb. 9
Catch musician Roger Banister live at Cedar Creek Winery on February 9, beginning at 4 pm. Roger is known for high energy roots music that features vocals accompanied by guitar, bass, banjo and fiddle.
Roe's Annual Antiques & Collectibles Auction - Feb. 9
The Morgan County Fairgrounds welcomes back this fun annual auction event, featuring a wide variety of antiques and collectibles. Action begins at 10 am; furniture sells at 1 pm. Food service will be available on site.
Valentine's Day Brunch - Feb. 10
Love is in the air, and Zydeco's Cajun will be serving up a fun and authentic Cajun culinary experience on the Sunday before Valentine's Day, from 10 am to 4 pm. Reservations are recommend, and we hear there will be shrimp 'n grits on the menu (as well as other tasty options) plus a live performance as well.
Tapestry, starring Suzanne O Davis - Feb. 12
Another installment of the Morgan County Community Concert Series, Tapestry features Suzanne O Davis performing significant songs by Carole King. The show features piano, vocals, guitar and saxophone. Music begins at 7:30 pm at the Monrovia High School Auditorium.
Valentine's Day at Ralph & Ava's - Feb. 14
Ralph and Ava's Cafe in downtown Mooresville will feature a special prix fixe menu for Valentine's Day. The four course dining experience will feature a choice of appetizer, soup or salad, entree, two sides and a special chocolate fondue dessert. Cost is $40 per person (additional charge for prime rib entree). Reservations are strongly encouraged.
Valentine's Dinner at 21 North - Feb. 14-16
Chef-owned eatery 21 North in downtown Martinsville will feature a very special Valentine's dinner experience, available for three nights only. The special four-course dining experience will include complementing wines with each course, and a signature cocktail with dessert, plus a special take-home gift from the Martinsville Candy Kitchen! Reservations are required.
Shareable Valentine's Day Menu - Feb. 14-16
Chef Eli at Holy Smoke Hog Roast Company has created a fun shareable menu for Valentine's Day. Only $49.99 per couple, the menu will be available beginning at 4 pm on February 14-16. Couples will share their choice of appetizer, enjoy their own entree with side, then share a choice of special dessert options. Reservations are recommended.
Bomar & Ritter - Feb. 17
Enjoy live music from Mary Bomar and Bob Ritter at Cedar Creek Winery, beginning at 2 pm. The duo met in Nashville, Tennessee and have more than 29 years of experience performing their own brand of acoustic folk and folk rock music with tight harmony, intricate guitar arrangements and a lighthearted stage presence.
No Cover Songwriters Showcase - Feb. 21
