Morgan County in the Civil War: The 33rd Indiana Infantry Regiment

Make plans to attend this informative program and learn more about Morgan County and Indiana's involvement in the war to preserve the Union. On Saturday Oct. 29, the Morgan County Public Library in Martinsville will host a program from Dr. Chris Walker, Assistant Professor of History at Indiana Wesleyan University, in Marion. The presentation will be about the 33rd Indiana Infantry Regiment in the Civil War, which participated in some of the war’s most important military campaigns in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and the Carolinas. Over 2,000 men served in its ranks, and in 1863, the editor of the Indianapolis Journal exclaimed of the 33rd that, “No braver, more loyal or well-disciplined troops have been in the service.” While the artifacts focus on a single regiment, it provides a glimpse into the world of all Civil War soldiers.
